His research on heuristic search investigates automatic techniques for speeding up search, such as the automatic creation of search heuristics and the compilation of search problem definitions into highly efficient C code. His research on A.I. for curling focuses primarily on the strategic aspect of the game. As in any game, A.I. should be able to make shot selections that maximize the probability of winning the game. Technically, the main challenge in curling is that its state and action spaces are continuous.

Osmar R. Zaïane is a Professor in Computing Science at the University of Alberta, Canada, and Scientific Director of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Dr. Zaiane obtained his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University, Canada, in 1999. He has published more than 270 papers in refereed international conferences and journals. He is Associate Editor of many International Journals on data mining and data analytics and served as program chair and general chair for scores of international conferences in the field of knowledge discovery and data mining. Dr. Zaiane received numerous awards including the 2010 ACM SIGKDD Service Award from the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Mining, which runs the world’s premier data science, big data, and data mining association and conference.

Richard S. Sutton is a distinguished research scientist at DeepMind and a professor in the department of computing science at the University of Alberta. Before joining the University of Alberta in 2003, he worked in industry at AT&T and GTE Labs, and in academia at the University of Massachusetts. Rich received a PhD in computer science from the University of Massachusetts in 1984 and a BA in psychology from Stanford University in 1978. He is co-author of the textbook Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction from MIT Press. He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. At the University of Alberta, Rich directs the Reinforcement Learning and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and is a principal investigator of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. His research interests center on the learning problems facing a decision-maker interacting with its environment, which he sees as central to artificial intelligence.

He currently serves as Associate Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and has previously served as Associate Editor for JMLR, AIJ, JAIR and MLJ and as Program Co-chair for AAAI-2016, NIPS-2008 and ICML-2004. He has worked in many areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including model selection, on-line learning, adversarial optimization, boolean satisfiability, sequential decision making, reinforcement learning, Bayesian optimization, semi-definite methods for unsupervised learning, dimensionality reduction, and robust estimation.

Michael Bowling

I am a full professor at the University of Alberta. My research focuses on machine learning, games, and robotics, and I’m particularly fascinated by the problem of how computers can learn to play games through experience. I am the leader of the Computer Poker Research Group, which has built some of the best poker playing programs on the planet. The programs have won international AI competitions as well as being the first to beat top professional players in a meaningful competition. I am also a principal investigator in the Reinforcement Learning and Artificial Intelligence (RLAI) group and the Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Machine Learning (AICML). I completed my Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University, where my dissertation was focused on multiagent learning and I was extensively involved in the RoboCup initiative. My research has been featured on the television programs Scientific American Frontiers, National Geographic Today, and Discovery Channel Canada, as well appearing in the New York Times, Wired, on CBC and BBC radio, and twice in exhibits at the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC.
